Do not be afraid to let them know you are Pro-Life and that they should be too!
Most of the time you will want to communicate with legislator’s on one of two levels.
First on the State level, these legislators meet in Charleston beginning in January. There are members of the House of Delegates and members of the Senate.
Second, on the National level, these are either members of the House of Representatives or the U.S. Senate.
Methods of communication:
Tips: Be on time. The time to act can be very short and come without much warning. The state session lasts 60 days with bills traveling through a complicated process. When notified to contact your legislator, ACT! Don’t hesitate to contact your electing representatives they represent you. To maximize your effectiveness, communicate with your legislators before they have committed themselves on an issue.
The National Right to life website monitors bills before Congress. Visit their website, www.nrlc.org, frequently to see what bills are being considered. You can also see voting records and communicate with them.
Be personal. You can handwrite your letter or use a word processing program. Whichever method you chose, be personal. And be polite. Respect your legislator even if you do not agree with their position. Give your reasons for your position. Be specific and reference the bill name or bill number whenever possible. Discuss the effect in which a measure would have in the legislator’s own district. If you are aware of the voting history or past statements on the issue refer to them. Keep your communication short and to the point. Expect the legislator to respond to your communication and indicate so.
Follow-up. If your legislator votes the way you want be sure to let them know you appreciate it! If they vote against it, let them politely know you are disappointed and will continue to monitor their position.
Coming soon: What to say, how to say it and who to contact.
